Today’s Flowers: Ranunculus
Luiz Santilli, Denise Gullickson, Laerte Pupo, Denise B. Castro
We visited The Ranunculus Flower Fields in Carlsbad, near San Diego, CA. We come here almost every year but this year, we were here on Friday, little bit late. It is a 100-mile drive from Los Angeles. It was bright and sunny, when we left but it seemed overcast starting from San Juan Capistrano. I could only attribute the gloomy weather from the smoke the wind brought from the Santa Barbara brush fire (how sad) this week. This weekend was the last of the season, and we were thankful, there was 30% left in bloom.
This is a 50 acre field of Tecolote ranunculus flowers grown on a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The vast expanse of colorful blooms are available to the public for only ten weeks, starting in late March to early May. This year, after their Mother’s Day brunch, it will be closed. Then, the cycle starts, they will clear the fields, save the tubers or bulbs and getting the soil ready for planting in September for the next spring blooms. Inquiry mind, I asked the docent, a very energetic young 80-year old lady.
Just me (blush**) amidst a bed of bright orange ranunculus.
Some shades of pink.
and what’s left of them
May I offer these flowers to all mothers, for your virtual viewing. There are more flowers here.

Oh Ebie. Don’t you look just cute in that field of flowers. Like a flower yourself. I cannot even comprehend the work involved to look after these MASSES of flowers. Pick them all up, dry them, replant them etc. A massive undertaking but the result is overwhelming. Such glory as far as the eye reaches and love the building in the background too. A wonderful post.

I have not done a lot of research on this flower, but I think they call it buttercups, a close relation to the poppies.
