Day 4: Hot Creek Geological Site

What is so good about staying in Mammoth Lakes, is the proximity of many natural and historical sites. We have been all over and sometimes we come back for the second time.  One of the highlights of this trip is the visit to the Hot Creek Geological Site, along Owens River Road, just a few miles from town.

Hot Creek Warnings

There is a trail that leads down to the edge of the Hot Creek.

Hot Creek Geological Site

Hot Creek is a phenomenon of live hot springs and fumaroles or gas vents that heat a cold mountain stream. The stream water is derived primarily from melting snow that leaves Twin Lakes, 8,000 feet above sea level.

Hot Creek Danger Sign

Hot Creek also harbors danger. The locations, discharge rates, and temperatures of springs often change. The larger and more vigorous springs discharge from fractures in the volcanic rock (altered rhyolite) in the gorge.  That’s why there is a posted sign.  Since 2006, it has been closed, no swimming allowed.
