Today’s Flowers: Carnation

our gracious hosts

Carnation A

The scientific name is Dianthus Caryophyllus, that means flower of love or flower of the gods.  The Carnation has ruffled appearance, clove like scent and extended blooming period.

Carnation B

In the early part of the 20th century, the flower became the official flower of Mother’s Day.  It has the meaning of admiration, love and gratitude.  Especially given on May 15, in celebration of Teacher’s Day.  And these flowers are dedicated to everyone, who stopped by my blog as a Guest Friend.  I am truly overwhelmed with the numerous responses.

Flower Garden

Carnations require well drained, neutral and alkaline soil.  It can easily get along with other flowers too.

On a side note,  anyone interested on the Afghan pattern, I found it.  If you need a copy, please drop a line or two, I will send you a copy. (Safeguarding infringement rights.)

And – you said a lot of things about the Carnation I didn’t know! I didn’t know much to start with so…..:) Need to learn! :)

Carnation is one of my husband’s favorite flowers to give to me during occasions. It is very pretty indeed.

What Afghan pattern are you talking about? Is it the way those flowers were arranged? I have always dreamed of being able to make my flower garden appear like the flowers naturally grow and get along well together without needing mulch (which makes it seems so unnatural for me). In reality, my flowers look really wild, sprouting here and there, mixed with lots of weeds…chaos! Sigh…
