Today’s Flowers: Carnation
Luiz Santilli, Denise Gullickson, Laerte Pupo, Denise B. Castro
our gracious hosts
The scientific name is Dianthus Caryophyllus, that means flower of love or flower of the gods. The Carnation has ruffled appearance, clove like scent and extended blooming period.
In the early part of the 20th century, the flower became the official flower of Mother’s Day. It has the meaning of admiration, love and gratitude. Especially given on May 15, in celebration of Teacher’s Day. And these flowers are dedicated to everyone, who stopped by my blog as a Guest Friend. I am truly overwhelmed with the numerous responses.
Carnations require well drained, neutral and alkaline soil. It can easily get along with other flowers too.
On a side note, anyone interested on the Afghan pattern, I found it. If you need a copy, please drop a line or two, I will send you a copy. (Safeguarding infringement rights.)

Wonderful shots of the Carnation Ebie! But my favourite is never the less the last shot; that is so wonderful with all the different colors!
And – you said a lot of things about the Carnation I didn’t know! I didn’t know much to start with so…..:) Need to learn!

Carnation is one of my husband’s favorite flowers to give to me during occasions. It is very pretty indeed.
What Afghan pattern are you talking about? Is it the way those flowers were arranged? I have always dreamed of being able to make my flower garden appear like the flowers naturally grow and get along well together without needing mulch (which makes it seems so unnatural for me). In reality, my flowers look really wild, sprouting here and there, mixed with lots of weeds…chaos! Sigh…

Hi Manang, it was a post I did for Today’s Flowers. Instead of real flowers, I posted an afghan with crochet flowers motif.

I love Carnations too, mine all died last summer with the drought, even the toughest pinks. I just hope they at least may reseed.

Hi Ebie, your photos are lovely and thank you for the information on the carnation. I often think of my father’s garden – it was full of them. I hope you are having a great week.
