Sunday Stills: Textures

This is a photo challenge themed meme. Pacey from Today’s Blah got me intrigued. Hosted by Ed of Sunday Stills, the challenge for this week is TEXTURE. Come join us, it is fun!

Gardena

This is the trunk of the silk cotton tree or kapok, it can become more than 9′ in diameter.

Silk Cotton Tree Pods

The cotton inside the fruits is used a substitute for cotton.

Silk Cotton Tree

The kapok tree grows more than 200′ tall: with widely spreading branches, it is the tallest tree of the Amazon rain forest.

I remember a children’s song about a kapok tree but I can’t seem to get the lyrics anymore. I love that first shot, really a great entry for textures.

@ Pacey, I think the lyrics go this way: Kapok trees are thinking, thinking (forgot this part) of me, drying pods are dangling, from the thoughtful tree. This is how far I can go. Whew, this is ages for me.

huge huge tree. Interesting about the fruit….how many does it take to make any kind of cotton substitute for use? Are they grown commerically?

    Great shot

So it are kapok trees that stick out of the roof of foliage of the rain forest : interesting !!! I’ve been painting a piece of rainforest lately and noticed trees sticking out, now I know their name.

So, that tree I had back home was kapok. It had some kind of cotton inside and I thought all along that it was some kind of cotton.

    Informative entry, Ebie. Thanks.

A lovely shot! In Afrikaans(in South Africa) there is a word “kapok” which means “snow”, like the inside of your fruit.

I’m glad you joined Sunday Stills! The first shot of the kapok bark is fabulous. I’ve known about kapok, but I’ve never actually seen one before! They are all great shots. Thanks for your kind comments, too!
