Bougainvillea was discovered in Brazil in 1768, by Philibert Commerçon, French Botanist accompanying French Navy admiral and explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville during his voyage of circumnavigation.
It is sometimes referred to as “paper flower” because the bracts are thin and papery.
They are rapid growing and flower all year in warm climates, especially when pinched or pruned.
Bougainvillea is a common sight along freeways, streets or parks or they adorn a fence. This photo was taken in a park in Downtown Los Angeles, near Staples Center. No people around? It was 3:45 in the afternoon shortly after work.
Here’s a collage of red ones. Although they come in different colors: pink, red, purple, yellow, orange and maybe more that I never know of. Aren’t they just lovely flowers?

Beautiful!
The gardener one year hacked back one of my bouganvilleas all the way back to a stump and I cried. It had been the prettiest tree!
The next year, it came back twice the size and it was even prettier the third year!
I miss living in the tropics!

Hi Sandy, in my personal opinion, it is a cross of two colors, the orange and the red. I found them at the Long Beach harbor.
