Our Gracious Hosts

The name of this flower is Dahlia. It is native to Mexico, Columbia and South America. It is a tuberous perennial plant and the national flower of Mexico. Its name is derived in honor of the Swedish botanist, Andreas Dahl (1751-1789).

Dahlia Flower A

The significance of dahlia is dignity, elegance and good taste.

Dahalia B

In the old days, the Aztecs used Dahlias to treat epilepsy. A sugar was made from Dahlia tubers,  before the use of insulin for diabetis.  Today, chemicals derived from Dahlias are used in clinical tests for the treatment of liver and kidney disease.

Dahlia Patch

Dahlias come in different colors and shades. They are white, purple, yellow, lavender, orange, pink, bi-colored and variegated blossoms, bronze, flame and red.

This  collection of flowers were sold at the downtown Farmers’ Market. I am not very sure if they are part of the dahlia family. Your comments are highly appreciated if they are not dahlias.
