Blogging for Fun: Letter W

Hosted by Melissa our Fun Friday group started an A to Z meme.

Today’s topic is the letter W for Water Wheel

The water wheel is part of California Adventure’s water ride called Grizzly River Run, based upon the  Grizzly Peak, the bear shaped mountain, in the background.

Salt Flats at Bristol Dry Lake

Bristol Dry Lake, California Mojave Desert
March 27, 2010

Located  3 miles east of Amboy, CA, near RTE 66, it has  an elevation of approximately 600 feet.  Bristol Dry Lake is one of the sources of our table salt.  It has 60 million tons in reserve, and is still mined.

The surface of the playa lake is composed of sand, clay, and gypsum.   What is found in the salt body is mud of volcanic origin.  Underneath the salt body is a bed of bluish clay 8 to 10 feet in thickness.

Another bed of salt average 5 feet in thickness.  As the sun begins to set, the rays are reflecting its glow.

The lake is covered by a few inches of water in the winter.  But for the most part of the year, it is dry and taste salty.
