“I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze”.

Excerpts from the poem: I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud

Hsi Lai Temple

“Hsi Lai” means Coming West in the sense of the “Great Buddhadharma Coming West.”

Hsi Lai Temple  (approximate pronunciation She Lye) is a traditional Chinese Buddhist mountain monastery in the United States.

It is located on the foothill region of Hacienda Heights, California, USA, a suburb of Los Angeles County.

I Love the Sea!

I love the sea! I love the briny smell of the sea! A quick trip to the coast helps us cool off under this hot summer days. It has gradually cooled off and hopefully the weekend will be better.

Coach Barn and Queen Ann Cottage

Source: Wikipedia

Queen Anne Cottage and Coach Barn is a National Register of Historic Places structure (site #80000804) on the grounds of the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden in Arcadia, California. It was placed on the Register in 1980 for its significance as an example of Queen Anne Style architecture and for the associated, largely intact Victorian landscape.

The Cottage was constructed in 1885-1886 for Elias Jackson “Lucky” Baldwin and his fourth wife, Lillie Bennett, the daughter of the Cottage’s architect Albert A. Bennett.

Upon E.J.’s death in 1909, his daughter closed the Cottage and disposed of all furnishings. Some of the architectural elements of the Cottage, such as the stained glass windows, black walnut doors, and marble fireplace mantels were stored in the coach barn. The stored items were reinstalled in the Cottage during the 1951-1953 restoration.

Alternating slats of interior cedar and redwood paneling and original iron grillwork, cast by Savage and Son of San Francisco in 1879, contribute to the feeling of opulence. Lucky Baldwin housed his private carriages plus those of his guests in this Barn (a report of 1891 indicated 14 different vehicles in residence).

Generous stall space was provided for carriage horses, and convenient hay and grain chutes were fed directly from the loft above. Coachman’s quarters, originally provided in the upper tower room above the hay loft, have been re-created in the downstairs tack room.

It has been so hot in some parts of Southern California the past week reaching as high as 104 degrees in the Valleys on Saturday and Sunday.  This will continue until midweek when we get a reprieve of the weather cooling down to the mid 70′s.

Umbrellas may help alleviate the penetrating rays of the sun

Or a delicious smoothie or yogurt, hmmm, refreshing

Or just frolic and cool off on the beach

Or  get out of the city and be at a higher elevation

Which we actually did this past Saturday.  Driving through Tejon Pass, going to Mt. Pinos  in Frazier Park for our 4-mile hike, potluck and star gazing party!

Climb, every mountain, who gets to the top first? :-)

It was 30 degrees cooler at 8900 feet elevation!

Reaching the summit on Vincent Tumamait Trail atop Mt. Pinos.  This is my second hike, and the first one was last month, posted here.

Even had time to goof around!!
