A Pond in the Volcanic Tablelands

The Volcanic Tablelands is located 6 miles north of Bishop, California. It is a vast volcanic landscape that was formed over 700,000 years ago by materials spewing from the Long Valley caldera, located to the northwest.

Just before you enter the area, we were greeted with this beautiful pond and landscape. Buy now, after two months, these colorful bushes may have turned brown.

Season: Early Fall – October 7, 2011
Bishop, CA

From Bishop, take State Highway 6 north to Five Bridges Road, then take a left. Proceed on Five Bridges Road 5 miles until it turns into a dirt road. At the entrance to the area, there is a BLM kiosk that provides map and route information for the Tablelands.

Hiking on a Sore Leg

Life has its twists and turns, one day you are OK, and another, NOT. However, this is not a deterrent of my quest to be at the Sandstone Peak. There are also my  limitations. Therefore, after hiking only for up to 3 quarters of a mile, I know I have to make a u-turn.

Sandstone Peak is the highpoint in the Santa Monica Mountains of Southern California. It is also known as Mount Allen, a name that was given and used mainly by the Boy Scouts. During the 1960s, in an attempt to honor Circle X benefactor Herbert Allen, the Scouts petitioned the United States Department of the Interior to rename Sandstone Peak.

On the way back, I amused myself with whatever I see.

While waiting for the rest of the group, I was busy birding

The remnants of summer’s wildflowers

I say to myself, be well and enjoy life!

Salton Sea

The Salton Sea is an inland saline lake in the Sonoran Desert of extreme southeastern California. It occupies the Salton Basin, a remnant of prehistoric Lake Cahuilla. It is borderded on the south by the rich agricultural areas of the Imperial Valley and on the west, by Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Both the Salton Sea State Recreation Area and the Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge are located on its shores.
