Cabrillo National Monument Tide Pools

Continuing my post from our weekend trip to San Diego (please see one post down) here are some photos of the tidepools at Cabrillo National Monument.

Although it was not a negative low tide, we still could see a few sea creatures.

You see some rose colored coralline algae and some rock reflections.

These barnacles clinging to the rocks are a little bit dry.

I see life in this seaweed

A lone seagull wading, but there were plenty of them flying around

I caught this in flight gull, flying away from me!

Point Loma

This past weekend, my family and I and some friends drove to San Diego, approximately 125 miles south of Los Angeles. We explored Cabrillo National Monument and Point Loma.

This is the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, which is not just the housing of the light, but the home of the people who took care of it.

Point Loma is a four-mile peninsula, ringed in by San Diego and Mission Bays.

It was a warm day at high 70 degree weather, but the cool breeze emanating from the ocean made it a very comfortable t-shirt and short day.

A few wildflowers popping here and there.

We explored the tide pools, and here’s a preview of the how it looks at low tide. I call this scenery, a “fish eye” view.

One of the big anemones I saw, and there’s even more sea creatures photos I took.

We also went to La Jolla Cove to check out the seals, then settled in Escondido for the night.

Window Rock

Sunday Stills is a photo challenge and the theme is THROUGH AN OPENING:  to “find an opening (a window, knothole, fence…) and use it to frame something on the other side”.

We were looking for the “window” rock, said the leader of our group.  Yeah, I saw it on Mr. Hauser’s show on California’s Gold.  When we saw this somewhere in Hagen Canyon, we had to take turns and pick a number  .  I took her shot while idly waiting for my turn.  Linda’s hair blended with the colors of the rock.

Grown ups want to have fun, too!  That’s Roy!

That’s Aaron on the left photo.  See, how one has to climb through the “crevice” of this rock  to take a good angle.

These “windows” were found here somewhere in Hagen Canyon, photo below.

A View from the Top

One of my favorite low impact hike is Point Dume. From the parking lot, you can see rock climbers traversing the volcanic outcroppings.

It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon, and we made sure that the tides were low, so we can go check out the tide pools, and enjoy the cool weather, too.

The initial assent was not steep, though fences were in place, for everyone’s safety.  I saw lots of kids with their parents.

Looking south down the coast of Malibu is Dume Cove.  People coming back from down below the tidepools (stairs will take you down) told us they saw seals at the tip of the cove.  When we got there, we were too late, they were gone.
